Overview

Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Bright-eyed Ellie' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a complex cross of (*H.* 'Arctic Blast' × (*H.* 'King Tut' × *H.* 'Sun Power')) as pod parent and *H.* 'Queen of the Seas' as pollen parent. The plant is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with gold margins, serrated edges, and a pronounced upright, vase-shaped habit with corrugated, wavy foliage and a distinctive flipped leaf tip.

In the Garden

'Bright-eyed Ellie' reaches a mature height of 13 inches (33.0 cm) and a spread of 20 inches (50.8 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones. Its upright form and gold-margined leaves pair well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its blue-green tones. The plant's moderate size also suits container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as shoots emerge. While hostas are generally susceptible to slugs and deer, 'Bright-eyed Ellie' has leathery leaf substance that may offer some resistance to slug damage.
