Overview
Registered in 1989 by V. Santa Lucia, *Hosta* 'Alex Summers' is a sport of *H.* 'Gold Regal' distinguished by its medium green leaves with chartreuse to gold margins. The foliage is ovate with moderate substance, bearing 10 to 12 pairs of veins, and forms a dense, rounded clump.
In the Garden
This medium-sized hosta reaches approximately 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and spreads to 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in partial to full shade. Its variegated foliage provides contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or dark-leaved perennials such as *Actaea* or *Ophiopogon*. While not classified as miniature, it can be grown in containers if provided with adequate root space and consistent moisture.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitoring and protective measures are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
