Overview
'Handy Hatfield' is a sport of 'Sun Glow' and was registered in 1996. Its leaf is 10 in by 6 in with a medium gold margin 1.5 in wide. The AHS registry record gives lavender tubular flowers and brown seed pods, from a clump grown in Columbus, Ohio.
In the Garden
The clump was registered as mound-like, 36 in across and 20 in high, with a moderate growth rate. The scapes are 22 to 26 in.
How it compares
'Sun Glow' is the sport parent. It is an all-yellow plant registered at 12 in high and 22 in across, with a leaf of 7 in by 5 in and white flowers, raised from 'Aspen Gold' crossed with itself. 'Handy Hatfield' differs in color pattern, with gold limited to the edge, and in flower color, which is lavender instead of white.
'Mayan Moon' is a sport of 'August Moon' with a similar margin, golden yellow and 1 to 1.5 in. It is registered at 18 in high and 40 in across, and its leaf is shorter, 8 in by 7 in, and moderately corrugated.
'Bridgeville' is the narrow-edged version: upright at 13 in high and 27 in across, with a light green (yellow) margin of only 0.38 in on a heavily rippled leaf. Choose it if deep purple flowers on scapes of 37 to 40 in matter more than a wide gold band.
