Registered in 1990 by Fairway Enterprises, *Hosta* 'Crown Royalty' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaves with chartreuse to gold margins. The foliage is broadly ovate, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, with eight pairs of veins, and the marginal variegation provides a clear contrast against the darker leaf centers.

In the Garden

With a mature spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and height of 24 inches (61.0 cm), 'Crown Royalty' forms a substantial clump suitable for partial to full shade locations in typical hosta-growing zones. Its medium size and bold variegation make it effective as a specimen plant or in massed groupings beneath deciduous trees, and it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant is not typically recommended for container cultivation due to its moderate spread.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad foliage is susceptible to both pests.
