Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'You Light Up My Life' is a large, upright cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Foxy Doxy'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Maekawa'* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, deeply corrugated, blue-green leaves with wide, creamy white, slightly rippled margins, and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial clump reaching approximately 27 inches (68.6 cm) in height and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It is best suited to partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its upright habit and leathery foliage make it a robust specimen for the middle of the border or as a focal point in shaded beds. The wide, creamy white margins provide strong contrast against darker-leaved companions such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
