Overview
Registered in 2010, *Hosta* 'Xtraordinary' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Riptide' as the pod parent and an unnamed seedling as the pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its deeply corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a very shiny upper surface, combined with burgundy-speckled scapes and petioles.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its bold leaf texture and purple-tinged stems pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant is noted for insect and disease resistance, reducing the need for routine pest management.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While the cultivar shows resistance to common pests, standard slug and deer deterrents may still be advisable in high-pressure areas within typical hosta-growing zones.
