H. ‘X-ray’

Overview

Registered in 2000 as a sport of Hosta 'Gold Edger', 'X-ray' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its narrow, lanceolate leaves of greenish-white with medium green, heavily rippled margins. The leaf blade is 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and only 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, with four vein pairs, a dull surface on both sides, and a tapered base.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a low, dense mound 6 inches (15.2 cm) tall and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones and performs well in rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a border. Its small stature and narrow leaves make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where its distinctive variegation is easily appreciated.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry spells. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'X-ray' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
