Section classV-6a (Miniature)

Overview

Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'X-rated' is a sport of *Hosta* 'X-ray' distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves with pure white centers and medium green margins. This miniature cultivar forms a compact, mound-like specimen reaching 2 inches (5.1 cm) in height and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in diameter, with heavily rippled leaf margins and a twisted, wavy leaf blade.

In the Garden

'X-rated' is best suited for shaded or partially shaded locations in typical hosta-growing zones, where its white-centered foliage remains stable throughout the growing season without melting out. Its diminutive size makes it an excellent choice for trough gardens, rockeries, or the front of a shaded border, where it can be paired with other small-scale shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. The plant's moderate growth rate and compact habit also suit container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'X-rated' may be browsed by deer and is susceptible to slug damage, particularly on the tender white leaf centers.
