Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' registered in 2000, 'Vim and Vigor' is a giant variegated cultivar distinguished by very shiny, dark green leaves with flat margins, a rounded base, and a fast growth rate. Its substantial mound reaches 34 inches (86.4 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 15.25 inches (38.7 cm) long and 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) wide, bearing 17 to 18 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Vim and Vigor' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, where its large, glossy leaves create a bold textural presence. Mature plants form a substantial mound nearly 4 feet across, making this cultivar suitable as a specimen or for the back of a shaded border. Its size and rapid growth allow it to function as a groundcover in larger woodland gardens, though it requires ample space to develop fully.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
