Overview

Registered in 2004 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Snow Crust', 'Upper Crust' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, flat gold margins. The leaf center is described as greenish yellow, transitioning to blue-green with maturity, while the 1-inch-wide margins remain dark green; the leaf surface is dull above with a thin glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

'Upper Crust' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins hold their color without scorching. Suitable companions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it appropriate for the middle of a border or as a specimen in a shaded bed.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Upper Crust' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and control measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
