Overview

Registered in 2012, 'Unruly Child' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar originating from seedling crosses (PDN 97-067 × PDN 97-094). It is visually distinctive for its intensely wavy, broadly ovate leaves with dark green serrated margins, a very shiny upper surface, and heavily ruffled margins and leaf surfaces.

In the Garden

'Unruly Child' forms a mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its textured foliage provides contrast alongside finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The green scapes, 18 to 24 inches (45.7 to 61.0 cm) tall, bear flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Unruly Child' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
