Overview

Registered in 2003 by J. Wilkins, *Hosta* 'Special Occasion' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its upright habit and dark green leaves with slightly rippled margins, bearing a resemblance to a smaller form of *Hosta* 'Krossa Regal'.

In the Garden

This hosta forms a clump reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and its upright, vase-shaped habit makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. The dark green, slightly shiny leaves provide contrast when paired with golden or blue-leaved hostas, and its size allows for use in larger containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
