Registered in 1999, *Hosta* 'Smoothie' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from a hybrid of *Hosta montana*. It is visually distinctive for its dark green leaf margins and very shiny upper leaf surfaces, which contrast with the dull undersides and rounded leaf bases.

In the Garden

'Smoothie' forms a mound-like clump reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland garden settings, though it is not typically recommended for containers due to its mature spread.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may occasionally browse the foliage, the thick, shiny leaves offer moderate resistance compared to thinner-leaved cultivars.
