Overview

Registered in 2012 with parentage unknown, *Hosta* 'Shine On' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar distinguished by its exceptionally glossy leaf surface and deeply impressed veins. The ovate, medium green leaves have flat margins and a very shiny adaxial surface, contrasting with a dull underside, while the leaf blade measures 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide with nine vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Shine On' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 37 inches (94.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, where its glossy foliage can be appreciated without scorching. The plant's medium size and rounded habit make it suitable for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden, pairing well with ferns or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly on the shiny new foliage.
