Overview

Registered in 1985 by R. Solberg, 'September Sun' is a medium-sized sport distinguished by its yellow leaf centers with narrow, dark green margins. The foliage emerges with a greenish-yellow cast in spring, gradually intensifying to a bright gold by late summer, while the margins remain a deep, contrasting green.

In the Garden

Mature plants reach 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and spread to 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, forming a dense, rounded clump. It performs best in partial to light shade, where the leaf color develops most evenly; full sun may cause marginal scorch, while deep shade reduces the gold intensity. The medium size and bold foliage make it suitable for mid-border positions, woodland edges, or as a specimen in mixed shade plantings. Its compact habit also suits container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, to maintain leaf quality and prevent edge browning. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage in susceptible gardens; monitor and manage as needed.
