Overview
Registered in 2000, 'Clifford's Polar Moon' is a sport of an unidentified parent and produces a small, fast-growing mound. Its visual distinction lies in the leaf coloration: a golden yellow center with a wide, flat green margin, a reverse of the more common green-centered, gold-margined pattern.
In the Garden
This small hosta reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and spreads to 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, forming a dense mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold center remains bright without scorching. The compact size suits it for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings; companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and small woodland perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed. Suitable for typical hosta-growing zones.
