Overview
Registered in 2013, *Hosta* 'Honey Pie' is a large, fast-growing cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'September Sun' (pod parent) and *H. plantaginea* (pollen parent). It is visually distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, golden yellow margins, slightly rippled edges, and moderately corrugated surfaces, combined with large, fragrant golden yellow flowers.
In the Garden
'Honey Pie' reaches a mature spread of approximately 40 inches (101.6 cm) and a height of 18 inches (45.7 cm), with a semi-upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a mixed border. Its fast growth rate and large, puckered leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials; it is not suited for container cultivation due to its size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
