Overview
Registered in 1986 by D. Lehman and the American Hosta Society, 'Ruffles' is a large, variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinguished by its medium green leaves with small, undulating margins and a substantial mature spread of 40 inches (101.6 cm).
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a dense, mounding clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with scapes that can extend up to 53 inches (134.6 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large size makes it unsuitable for containers but effective as a specimen or in mass plantings.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges; slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed.
