Overview
Registered in 1986 by Shaw and the American Hosta Society, 'Birchwood Ruffled Queen' is a large, variegated sport of *Hosta* 'Green Piecrust'. It is visually distinctive for its dark green leaves with slight undulating margins and a substantial mature spread of 60 inches (152.4 cm) at a height of 24 inches (61.0 cm).
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its large, textured foliage can develop fully without scorching. Its mature size—nearly 5 feet in diameter—makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in the middle to back of a shaded border. Companion plants such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Astilbe* provide contrasting textures and colors.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
