Overview
Registered in 1980 by E. Minks, this large hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Ruffles' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Elegans' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its gray-green leaves with undulating margins, a trait inherited from its parentage, and its substantial size.
In the Garden
'Regal Ruffles' forms a clump 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) tall, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large, textured leaves provide contrast against finer-textured groundcovers.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry spells. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
