Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Richland Royal Prince', 'Richland Royal Purple' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar distinguished by its green leaf margins combined with a dull upper surface and very shiny underside. The leaves measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with eight pairs of veins and a tapered base.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height and 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the green margins remain stable, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The green scapes, rising 30 to 32 inches (76.2 to 81.3 cm) tall, carry the flowers above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and use appropriate controls in typical hosta-growing zones.
