Overview
Registered in 1998, *Hosta* 'Obsession' is a small-sized sport with a distinctive variegation pattern: medium green leaf centers are bordered by very dark green, flat margins approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide. This two-tone effect, combined with a slightly shiny upper leaf surface and dull underside, gives the cultivar a crisp, high-contrast appearance unusual among small hostas.
In the Garden
Reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, 'Obsession' forms a compact, mound-like clump with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its dark green margins remain most distinct, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. Its diminutive size makes it suitable for troughs, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Obsession' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor foliage for feeding signs and apply controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
