H. ‘Obsession’

Overview

Registered in 1998, Hosta 'Obsession' is a small-sized sport with a distinctive variegation pattern: medium green leaf centers are bordered by very dark green, flat margins approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide. This two-tone effect, combined with a slightly shiny upper leaf surface and dull underside, gives the cultivar a crisp, high-contrast appearance unusual among small hostas.

In the Garden

Reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, 'Obsession' forms a compact, mound-like clump with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its dark green margins remain most distinct, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as Heuchera or Tiarella. Its diminutive size makes it suitable for troughs, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Obsession' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor foliage for feeding signs and apply controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
