Overview
Registered in 1998 by C. Falstad, this small hosta cultivar is a sport of an unnamed parent. 'Loyalist' is visually defined by its green leaves edged in creamy white margins, a classic variegated form in miniature.
In the Garden
Mature plants reach approximately 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in leaf length and 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) in width, forming a compact clump suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the white margins remain crisp without scorching. Companion plants with contrasting foliage, such as ferns or small sedges, complement its tidy habit.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry spells. Fertilize lightly in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Loyalist' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
