Overview

Registered in 2000, 'Clifford's Broken Heart' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Loyalist' that produces a compact mound of green leaves with broad, flat white margins. The cultivar is distinguished by its small stature, fast growth rate, and the sharp contrast between the dark green leaf centers and the 1-inch-wide white borders.

In the Garden

This small hosta reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and spreads to 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, forming a dense, rounded mound. It performs best in partial to full shade and is well-suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for container plantings, and it pairs effectively with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or ferns.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
