Overview

Registered in 1989 by C. Ellyson and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Johanne' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with blue-green margins and prominent veining, forming a compact, mounded habit.

In the Garden

'H Johanne' reaches a mature diameter of 19 inches (48.3 cm) and a height of 11 inches (27.9 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its blue-green foliage pairs well with yellow- or gold-leaved hostas or fine-textured ferns. The 17.5-inch (44.5 cm) scapes produce lavender flowers in midsummer, adding vertical interest.

Care Notes

Plant in well-drained, organic-rich soil and water regularly during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release formulation. Like most blue-green hostas, 'Johanne' is moderately resistant to slugs but may require protection in damp conditions. Deer may browse foliage in early spring.
