Overview
Registered in 1988 by the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society (BHHS), *Hosta* 'Iona' is a medium-sized sport of an unidentified parent. Its leaves are green with creamy white margins, a variegation pattern that provides clear visual contrast.
In the Garden
As a medium hosta, 'Iona' reaches a mature spread of approximately 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) and a height of 12–18 inches (30–45 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white margins remain crisp and the green center holds its color. Pair with ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Tiarella* for textural contrast; it is not well suited to container culture due to its size.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed.
