Overview

Registered in 2008 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Glockenspiel' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its flat, low-growing habit and tall scapes that rise well above the foliage. The leaves are ovate with flat bases, medium green with slightly rippled margins, and exhibit a slight shine on the upper surface with a very shiny underside.

In the Garden

'Glockenspiel' reaches 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and spreads to 19 inches (48.3 cm) in diameter, forming a compact, flat mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its small size makes it well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. The low, dense foliage pairs effectively with small ferns or epimediums, and the tall scapes—reaching 23 to 26 inches (58.4 to 66.0 cm)—provide vertical interest above the mound.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer, which may damage the foliage.
