Overview

Registered in 2011, 'Mint Chip' is a small hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Little Jim' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Glockenspiel' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its ovate leaves with medium green, heavily rippled margins and a dull upper surface that contrasts with a slightly shiny underside, creating a variegated effect.

In the Garden

'Mint Chip' reaches a mature height of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and a spread of 10 inches (25.4 cm), with an upright growth habit and fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is well-suited for small spaces, rock gardens, or as a front-of-border accent. Its compact size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, and it pairs effectively with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Mint Chip' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
