Overview

Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'Vanilla Chip' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Little Jim' (seed parent) and *Hosta* 'Glockenspiel' (pollen parent). Its distinguishing features include medium green, ovate leaves with narrow (0.2 cm), creamy white, heavily rippled margins and a lightly cupped form.

In the Garden

'Vanilla Chip' reaches a mature size of approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones and performs well in rock gardens, troughs, or as a front-of-border accent. Its small stature makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where the white-margined foliage provides contrast against darker-leaved companions such as *Heuchera* or ferns.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may damage foliage, the small, thick leaves of 'Vanilla Chip' are less susceptible than larger-leaved cultivars; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
