Overview
Registered in 2013 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Midnight Sun', 'Friendly Persuasion' is a giant-sized cultivar distinguished by its medium green leaves with broad, pale yellow margins. The leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, measure up to 33 cm long and 25.4 cm wide, and bear 15 to 16 pairs of veins; the margins are slightly rippled and 2.5 to 3.8 cm wide. The leaf surface is dull on both sides, and the plant exhibits an upright growth habit.
In the Garden
With a mature diameter of approximately 122 cm and a height of 51 cm, 'Friendly Persuasion' is suited to the middle or rear of a shaded border, where its substantial foliage and upright form provide structure. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad, variegated leaves. The plant's moderate growth rate means it will fill its space over several seasons without becoming overly aggressive.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; regular monitoring and appropriate barriers are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
