Overview
Registered in 1996, 'Midnight Sun' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'High Noon' (pod parent) and *Hosta montana macrophylla* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its large, dark green leaves with wide, yellow-gold, slightly rippled margins, forming an upright, moderate-growing mound.
In the Garden
'Midnight Sun' reaches a mature diameter of 60 inches (152.4 cm) and a height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), with scapes rising 36 to 39 inches (91.4 to 99.1 cm). It performs best in partial to dappled shade, as is typical for gold-margined hostas, and benefits from protection from intense afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in woodland gardens, paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Midnight Sun' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
