Year registered1995
Section classIII-1

Overview

Registered in 1995 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Guacamole', 'Fried Green Tomatoes' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its highly glossy, variegated foliage. The leaves display medium green margins with smooth surfaces that are very shiny on both top and underside, contrasting with the lighter center typical of its parent.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an open, semi-upright clump reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its 8-inch-long by 6-inch-wide leaves with rounded bases and 6 to 8 vein pairs make it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. The 30- to 38-inch (76.2 to 96.5 cm) scapes produce lavender flowers in midsummer, and the plant pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
