Overview

Registered in 2008, 'Framingham Express' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of seedling parentage, notable for its exceptionally tall dark purple scapes that rise well above the foliage. The leaves are variegated with medium green, slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a dull underside; they are ovate with a flat base and lightly wavy, flat profile.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height, with a fast growth rate. It is suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its dark purple flower buds and tall scapes (30 to 36 inches, or 76.2 to 91.4 cm) provide vertical interest. Companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods; fertilize in early spring as growth emerges. The cultivar is noted for disease and insect resistance, including slug tolerance, and has very thick leaf substance that reduces damage from pests and weather.
