Overview

Registered in 1988 by M. Zilis and T&Z Nursery, *Hosta* 'Evening Magic' is a large sport of *H. 'Piedmont Gold'* distinguished by its gold-centered leaves framed by narrow white margins. The foliage measures 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, with 13 pairs of veins and a white margin 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) wide.

In the Garden

'Evening Magic' forms a substantial clump reaching 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height, with scapes rising 36 inches (91.4 cm) above the crown. It performs best in partial to light shade, where the gold leaf centers maintain their color without scorching. This large hosta works well as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, paired with darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Evening Magic' is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
