Overview
Registered in 1982 by F. H. Payne, this medium-sized cultivar is distinguished by its green leaves with deep yellow margins. The parentage is unknown, but the consistent gold border and broad leaf shape give the plant a clear two-toned appearance.
In the Garden
‘Piedmont Gold’ forms a clump 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) tall, with leaves 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold margins remain bright without scorching. The 26-inch (66.0 cm) scapes bear lavender flowers in midsummer. Suitable companions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it appropriate for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in mixed shade beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
