Overview

Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Dark Tower' is a giant variegated sport of *H. 'Sagae'*, distinguished by its exceptionally large, dark green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a dull surface. The cultivar forms a substantial mound reaching 35 inches (88.9 cm) in height and 80 inches (203.2 cm) in diameter, with green scapes rising 42 to 45 inches (106.7 to 114.3 cm) above the foliage.

In the Garden

'Dark Tower' performs best in partial to full shade, where its dark green foliage contrasts effectively with lighter-leaved companions such as *H. 'June'* or *H. 'Patriot'*. Its giant size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in the middle to back of shaded borders; it is not recommended for containers due to its mature dimensions. The plant has a moderate growth rate and forms a dense, mound-like habit.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves show moderate resistance to slug damage, though standard slug control measures are advisable in wet seasons. Typical hosta-growing zones apply.
