Overview

Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Centennial' is a giant, upright-growing cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its substantial variegated foliage. The leaves present dark green, slightly rippled margins with a dull surface on both sides, reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in length and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in width, with 16 vein pairs and a cordate base.

In the Garden

With a mature spread of 72 inches (182.9 cm) and height of 38 inches (96.5 cm), 'Centennial' commands significant space in the shade garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its large, dark green leaves provide a bold textural contrast. Suitable companions include ferns, *Astilbe*, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its substantial form; it is not suited for container cultivation due to its giant size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate deterrents are advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
