Overview

Registered in 2005 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Celestial', 'Celestial Lightning' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with heavily rippled, multicolored margins that transition through greenish-yellow, pale yellow, yellow, and creamy white. The leaf blade itself is medium green with variable streaking, and the plant produces glaucous green scapes reaching 14 to 20 inches (35.6 to 50.8 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Celestial Lightning' forms a mound-like clump 11 inches (27.9 cm) tall and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the variegated margins remain most stable, and is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones. The broadly ovate, lightly cupped leaves—each 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) wide with 11 vein pairs—are moderately corrugated and slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its blue-green and cream tones.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The leaves are of heavy substance, offering moderate resistance to slugs, though standard slug management may still be warranted in damp conditions.
