Overview
Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Celestial' is a giant hybrid resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Dorothy Benedict' (pod parent) and *H. hypoleuca* (pollen parent). This cultivar is visually distinctive for its large, blue-green leaves with broad, greenish-yellow, slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 43 inches (109.2 cm) and height of 31 inches (78.7 cm), 'Celestial' functions as a substantial specimen or background plant in the shade garden. Its upright, slow-growing habit suits partially shaded to shaded sites in typical hosta-growing zones. The large, cordate leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, though the thick leaves offer some resistance; deer are known to browse hostas and may target this cultivar.
