Overview
Registered in 2005 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Merry Sunshine', 'Brilliant Sunset' is a large hosta cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with creamy white margins and dark green, slightly rippled borders. The leaf coloration, described as resembling sunrays at sunset, is produced by a broad central variegation zone of creamy white that extends 1 to 2.5 inches (2.5 to 6.4 cm) from the petiole, contrasted by a dark green margin.
In the Garden
'Brilliant Sunset' reaches a mature size of 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the leaf coloration remains most vivid, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact large size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or shaded foundation plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Brilliant Sunset' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
