Hosta ‘Athletic Event’ is a registered cultivar () .

Year registered2008
Section classIV-4b

Overview

A sport of an unidentified parent, 'Athletic Event' was registered in 2008 and is classified as a small hosta. Its distinguishing features are medium green leaves with very narrow (0.2 cm) white margins, slightly rippled edges, and a moderately folded elliptic blade with a tapered base. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above and moderately shiny beneath, with 6 to 8 vein pairs.

In the Garden

'Athletic Event' reaches a mature size of 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, forming a compact, rhizomatous clump. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones and works well in rock gardens, troughs, or the front of borders. Its small stature also makes it an appropriate candidate for container cultivation. Companion plants might include small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed as needed.
