Overview

Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Aomori Select' is a medium-sized variegated sport of an unnamed *Hosta rectifolia* selection, originating from material collected in the wild in northern Japan. The cultivar is visually distinctive for its ovate leaves with medium green margins and a slightly shiny upper surface, contrasting with a very shiny underside, borne on upright plants that reach 18 inches in height and 40 inches in diameter.

In the Garden

This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its moderate growth rate and upright habit make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. Mature plants form clumps approximately 3.3 feet wide and 1.5 feet tall, with scapes rising 36 to 40 inches above the foliage. It pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, or other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its medium green leaf margins.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard hosta care includes protection from slugs and deer, which may damage the leaves.
