Overview

Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Alex' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H. 'Dorothy Benedict'* and *H. 'Elatior'*. It is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with narrow, flat gold margins and its ability to retain good color well into October.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter and 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover under deciduous trees. The gold-margined foliage pairs well with dark-leaved heucheras or ferns.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended, as the foliage is palatable to both.
