Overview

Registered in 1981 by Gardenview Horticultural Park, this giant hosta cultivar produces substantial clumps with large, variegated leaves. The foliage features vivid green margins surrounding lighter centers, with leaves measuring 15 inches (38.1 cm) long and 11 inches (27.9 cm) wide, displaying 14 to 15 vein pairs.

In the Garden

Reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and spreading to 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, 'Witches Brew' requires substantial space in the landscape. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, where its bold foliage provides strong textural contrast. The tall scapes, rising 26 to 28 inches (66.0 to 71.1 cm), bear lavender flowers in midsummer. Suitable companions include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its massive scale.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and employ control measures as needed.
