Overview
Registered in 2003 by H. Hansen as a sport of *Hosta* 'Abiqua Moonbeam', 'Velvet Moon' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaves with broad, golden yellow margins. The leaf surface is dull above and slightly shiny beneath, with flat, broadly ovate blades and a flat base.
In the Garden
'Velvet Moon' reaches a mature spread of approximately 38 inches (96.5 cm) and a height of 17 inches (43.2 cm), with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Velvet Moon' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
