H. ‘Vanguard’

Hosta ‘Vanguard’ is a registered cultivar () .

Year registered2003
Section classI-3

Overview

Registered in 2003, this giant hybrid between *Hosta montana* macrophylla and *Hosta* 'Sagae' produces a substantial mound of broadly ovate, green leaves with greenish yellow, slightly rippled margins. The foliage is notably glossy on the upper surface, with a dull underside, and the leaf blades reach 18 inches (45.7 cm) in length and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in width, bearing 14 to 15 vein pairs.

In the Garden

Mature plants form a mound 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with scapes rising 34 to 36 inches (86.4 to 91.4 cm) above the foliage. This cultivar performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its large, glossy leaves and gold-edged variegation are most pronounced. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or as a backdrop for smaller perennials in woodland borders and shade gardens.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage in damp conditions, and deer will browse the leaves where present.
