Overview

Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Arnold Black' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'White Vision' (pod parent) and *Hosta montana macrophylla* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its large, broadly ovate leaves with dull green centers and pale yellow, slightly rippled margins that spread outward, creating a bold, mound-like form.

In the Garden

This giant hosta reaches approximately 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its large foliage. Its substantial size and spreading golden margins provide textural contrast against darker green companions.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
