H. ‘Valor’

Overview

Registered in 2014, 'Valor' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Hatshusimo'. It is visually distinctive for its upright, moderately wavy leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and deep veining with nearly no corrugation.

In the Garden

'Valor' reaches a mature spread of 70 inches (177.8 cm) and a height of 36 inches (91.4 cm), with an upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. The large, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and twisted, wavy margins provide textural contrast when paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Valor' is moderately susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas with high pest pressure.
