Overview

Registered in 2008, 'Valley's Chute-the-Chute' is a small hosta cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Kifukurin Ubatake' as the pod parent, with pollen parent unknown. It is visually distinctive for its lance-shaped, golden-yellow leaves with gold margins that retain their color longer in sunnier locations, and for its lightly wavy, pointed leaf blades with a very shiny upper surface.

In the Garden

This compact hosta reaches approximately 8 inches (20 cm) in both height and diameter at maturity, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade but can tolerate more sun than many gold-leaved cultivars, which helps prolong the intensity of its yellow foliage. The small size and fast growth rate allow it to function effectively as a groundcover or edging plant when planted in groups.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though its small, wavy leaves may be less appealing to pests than larger-leaved cultivars.
