Overview
Registered in 2008, *Hosta* 'Crumb Cake' is a small hybrid derived from *H.* 'Cinnamon Sticks' (seed parent) and *H.* 'Cracker Crumbs' (pollen parent). This cultivar is visually distinguished by its dense, low mound of nearly round, heavily textured leaves with green centers and golden yellow, slightly rippled margins, combined with chartreuse scapes bearing purple-striped flowers.
In the Garden
'Crumb Cake' forms a compact, fast-growing mound 5 inches (12.7 cm) tall and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, where its wavy, shiny foliage provides textural contrast alongside finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The small size and tidy habit also suit trough gardens or mixed shade containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as foliage is palatable to both pests.
